Ready to take a vacation like no other? Just trade in your subway pass for a New York City car rental and hit the open road, where the odd, the bizarre – and the truly strange await.
Start by having your picture taken with statues of Balto the Wonder Dog and John Purroy Mitchel (“The Boy Mayor”) at Central Park, then grab a bite and head over to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Chapel on Fort Washington Ave. Here, you can see Mother Cabrini’s body – but not her head. (America’s first canonized saint’s head is somewhere in Italy and has been replaced here with a waxed replica.)
After a good night’s sleep – and perhaps a few eerie dreams – hop in your car rental in New York City and make haste (but safely, please). Head up highway 87 to Saugerties, where you can see Opus 40 – a stunning monolith set against the backdrop of the Catskills. When you’re done, make your way up the road, and take a psychedelic journey through the Kaatskill Kaleidoscope (the world’s largest kaleidoscope).
On the way back, take one of our New York City rental cars for a little side trip and check out Sing Sing in Ossining. It’s a macabre, but an interesting look inside one of America’s most notorious prisons.
Back in town, spend the evening tooling around in one of our rental cars in New York City and enjoy the world’s most exciting cities from the driver’s seat.
